Nepali Sports On Net

When I began my NepalCricket site, I didn’t bothered to look whether it was first Nepali sports site or not. But now I feel like I should have checked that. It was after around two years that I made an official announcement of the site releasing a press release. At that time, Bhakundo.org.np was a good site for soccer and there was another site for football hosted on geocities. Both are defunct now.

After around four years, the scenario is different with a few more sites but what still lacks is professional sports sites. I believe there has been no substantial development on professionalism with my site but many other sports sites have appeared (some of them have already disappeared too).

Among disappeared one, I like to mention two. First was Khelkudnepal.com run by Tapas Thapa, a former sports reporter with The Kathmandu Post in conjunction with his friends and the other is All Nepal Football Association (ANFA)’s official site (ANFANepal.com). ANFA’s site now redirects to socceragenepal.com.np, a privately run soccer site.

This incident I find amazing because although I believe SoccerAgeNepal has been the best soccer site for more than a year now with live updates of national and international matches, I can’t digest the fact that an official website of the sports governing body redirecting to private site. What if someday, SoccerAgeNepal runs a story against ANFA?

Cricket Association of Nepal too has a site. It was updated quite well when Nepal hosted ACC U-19 Cup in November last year by the then office manager Aneesh Lohani. But since then, it hasn’t been touched yet and even when Nepal was playing U-19 World Cup in Sri Lanka it displayed the score of U-19 ACC Cup.

Interestingly, football clubs have probably started understanding a need of a website. Last year after winning the National League, Three Star Club opened one while this year’s winner Manang Marsyandi Club has just ventured into it. Besides, New Road Team, Macchindra Football Club and Brigade Boys Club have their own sites. Three Star’s is not updated for quite a while now. NRT’s is not a news site but looks like updated regularly and same to other two.

About cricket, there is another called ChitwanCricket.com which looks quite beautiful but rarely opens on my browsers. NepalSports.com has been registered but shows nothing more than links to few other sports sites. Nepal Olympic Committee has an informative official site.

I have also seen official sites of taekwondo and other such sports but they are neither much popular nor news-based site. So there is still a wait for a Nepali sports site. I don’t know when the internet will lure some investment on sports site. Right now, it looks like not going to happen.
