Lazy Saturday, Great Reading!

Saturdays for me are generally lazy days – I have the day-off at office and usually have no errands to run after. Thus, most of my Saturdays mean the busy telephone line (no not because I call friends, but because I use the Internet) and then, reading everything (novels or books or newspaper). And, what a day was today – reading my own The Kathmandu Post gave me intrinsic satisfaction with its front page contents.

Unlike most of the other days, today’s front page of TKP was a design to behold with a picture of two Muslims embracing that goes with the title – Eid Mubarak. A great picture and a diversified content actually.

Just below the picture, the story what we call anchor, is about an amazing man. The title goes – ‘At 73 he wants third wife to father 22nd child’. Isn’t it amazing? Read the story here and think about it.

Then you have two stories that really make you sad: ‘Maoists crush hands of a suckling mother’ in yet another show of brutality while ‘500 youths under Maoists house arrest’ in Banke district.

While reading these stories, I remembered one I had translated two years ago. I don’t remember the details but it was about brutal murder of a 70-year-old farmer by the Maoists. The farmer who was accused of not paying attention to their order was killed by stoning below his knees. I visualize the situation whenever I remember that and think about the ‘humanity’. Killing a 70-year-old man hitting with stones below his knees is just aweful. Visualize the pain, (too long because it would take to long to die in that way!)

I find it always disturbing that in the name of people’s movement, the Maoists and in the name of saving the nation from them, the security personnels are losing the best treasure of the humankind – ‘the humanity’.

And then TKP’s main story is ‘NC Active Membership Distribution Row: Leaders Demand CWC Meet to Discuss Irregularities’. I am not much fan of the political news but isn’t that story combined with other reflect the country’s situation? Anything happen to people, we have our own agendas.

So I talked about instrictic satisfaction earlier, and where that came from. Its from a two-col boxed story (I have loved it if it has appeared as the main story with a little background of the person invovled and a photo of him – may be I am a little emotional but that could have caught attetion of more people than the nasty politics of Nepali Congress!). The story ‘2 years jail, Rs 19.7m fine for Chaturbedi’ is about Ramagya Chaturbedi – former chief of Royal Nepal Airlines and National Construction Company, who was earlier taken into custody by Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority for massive iregularities and Supreme Court punishing him.

Many politicians and high level ‘corrupt’ officials have been taken into custody by CIAA but I never heard such a good news of punishment. (Afterall, as CIAA and I feel defamed whenever I see any news about politicians like Chiranjibi Wagle and even former PM Girija Prasad Koirala). A good decision and I would like to see same to many many other.
