ME2XP: Off Course, Windows Switch

Doesn’t the title look like a love poem? I seriously think this sounds like Me2U from one window to another (I am trying hard right now not to be tempted to write about love in this post). But this post is not about love, this is about Windows Millenium Edition and Windows eXPerience – Bill Gates’ Operating System that every computer user hates (Does Gates too?!!) yet can’t live without. Last week, I switched from ME to XP and that kept me hell busy.

First let me write the LONE reason behind this transaction. The reason is: because whenever I connected to internet, the computer hangs. (“Come on thats not a problem. Using some google, you can easily find the solution,” a friend told me but I was tempted by Windows XP).

Pre-Installation Works: Before I went by my decision to switch, I searched over internet for the XP driver of my modem. I found that.

Installation: For Windows XP, easy and smooth and time consuming with a Rs. 50 CD I brought in the street. For other program, painful. Finding the installation files, installing them (whisper, exclusively not for software vendors: and looking all over internet again for serial number). With more than six hours, I got everything alright.

Wow!

But wait. I was in the middle of a story when I thought I should do the rest in home and sent an email from office to home. After I went home, I saved the doc file on the desktop from email client. Then surprised to see the file’s icon is not of word but of nothing.

Damm it! I didn’t have Microsoft Office installed. I searched for old Rs. 50 CD around but didn’t find it. (Didn’t I earlier thought Windows XP contained Microsoft Word?) For a minute, I was dumbfounded. Then I remembered free office packages and my computer magazines CDs. Somehow I got 603PC Suite and installed it. Great, but I believe I will be soon installing MS one.

Post-Installation: Somehow, some trojon called CoolWebSearch hit my computer. Everytime I opened Internet Explorer, it will come out at default homepage. I tried to change my homepage but in vain. Then I googled and found a CWSshredder free. Great tool, removed everything at once.

So what’s my eXPerience? XP is definately better than ME but if your 98, 2000 or ME is working fine for you, don’t consider changing.
