PHP, CMS & an amateur webmaster

Having renovated my site, www.NepalCricket.com, five time this year, I have found confidence to recommend a few things to amateur webmasters: Which CMS is the best for them and how much PHP or HTML should they know?

As a admin/webmaster of the NepalCricket.com (fortunately the only site for Nepali cricket with updated news and all), I have tried, used and discarded many scripts freely available on the net. My search for a good CMS that will let me build my site as I wish with all the features I needed hasn’t yet ended, but now I feel something like a CMS tester who can recommend a few things or more.

For PHP CMS

The best for me is PHP-Update found at www.php-update.co.uk, thanks to Dave. I liked it much because its light weight, let me build the site as I wanted using my own original template and has the facility of news, poll, feedback form, guestbook, mailing list, gallery among others.

I have also tried, DevCMS the lightweight and useful CMS with the feature of discussion board, news, feedback form, gallery, membership and a nice administration. I found it good but I didn’t like it for its less capability of customization.

I have also looked at Mambo, acclaimed best CMS, and XOOPS. Both are good, but it was difficult for a newbie like me. Only using it after a few months, anybody will be aware of what actually it is. PHP-NUKE – heavy and more features than I needed.

Other Scripts

CuteNews is the best news script available, found at http://cutephp.com.

PHP? HTML?

Knowing these two always help but I don’t know anything about PHP. I am a little good at HTML and that has always helped me to create templates and solve a few problems. At least you should know some basic tags for a efficient use of all these scripts.
