Those were the words of Binaya Raj Pandey recorded on September 30, 2006 — a day after he was appointed the president of Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN). Spoken at a time when the mismanagement and lack of cricket development initiatives had frustrated players and fans alike, Pandey´s words were quite soothing to the ear.
His appointment brought hopes of resurrection as the businessman bore a perfect profile of someone who could be entrusted with cricket development. His diplomacy, domestic and international ties and decades long association with cricket made him a person to look at to bring some order in the derailed cricket management.
After four years, however, much of that zeal and fanfare had been lost. If Kantipur Television rebroadcast the interview, it would surely be embarrassing for Pandey as he has not been able to deliver much of what he had promised despite being in a capable position.
I was present at the interview — and I know there are a few other things that he had promised and delivered. He has delivered on the promotion of women cricket, finding sponsors and also on giving some shape to the Mulpani cricket ground. While those are substantial achievements, they did not help the overall growth of Nepal´s cricketing level.
We still have good players and we still know something is lacking. Many of us, including Pandey, know that the some things that are lacking include exposures, matches and tournaments. Nothing much has happened in those areas even in the last four years.
CAN did introduce the two-day league. But the very first edition was postponed due to security reasons, and then they just forgot about it. Pandey had told media that the number of days of the two-day league would be gradually increased in subsequent years. It still remains a forgotten promise.
He repeatedly talked, formally and informally, about tie ups with India and the regional boards of the Test playing nations, but it never happened. During those years, he did manage to sign agreements with Pakistan and Bangladesh on tours but not with India — the best and most affordable option for Nepal. It´s not easy to have tie-up with India because they have never been enthusiastic about Nepal´s cricket.
For last two years, Pakistan´s cricket suffered most due to terrorist attack on Sri Lankan team. They lost tours and even World Cup matches, and were desperate to tell the world that the country is prepared for safety of the visiting teams. (The reason why they gave so much priority and coverage to the recent Pakistan tour of Nepali women team). Nepal could have used the opportunity for better bargains like a long-term tie-up and regular bilateral tours.
With all due respect, for the time and commitment Pandey has given to cricket, I must admit that I am disappointed with his and CAN´s achievement during his tenure as president. Bluntly, and ruthlessly, saying, CAN has functioned merely as a national agent of Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and International Cricket Council (ICC), providing them teams, venues and spreadsheets whenever they ask for.
I humbly want to remind Pandey of his promises, and I know if he honestly works towards fulfilling them, he is more than capable to deliver them. And, I hope he will work to deliver on his promises as he surely knows the saying: positions are temporary but contributions are permanent!

Like Choker said, what we can do as fan is to message him his facebook reminding him about his forgotten promises.
Dear Buddy Ujjwal,
Truly, a great piece of an eye-opener; who has gone into deep a slumber and forgotten for a brief period that he/she is supposed to wake up and accomplish the responsibilities assigned to him/her but not for those who pretend to be sleeping for various extraneous reasons; which may be justifiable or unjustifiable from the concerned party’s viewpoint. The person who is made the subject of discussion should also come out openly and give his/her point of view when his/her actions become a matter of concern; especially if he/she is assigned with the responsibilities of cricket development in the country. We live in a democratic world and every individual has his/her rights to ventilate his feelings in a socially accepted manner. Recently, I rang up at Cricket Association of Nepal and enquired if they visit this website (Nepalcricket.com) and find out what type of comments being written about CAN and on cricketing matters. I was not surprised to know the answer was in negative. As far as I can see this cricketnepal.com website is the one medium specifically dedicated towards Cricket and it would be in best interest of CAN to show proactive approach by seeing the comments being sent by cricket lovers from all over the world and filtering out the best suggestions and genuine critics, it should work for cricket development in Nepal. But unfortunately, this has not been the case. In Nepal, the order of the day is just big talks and big promises and as the days elapse, it evaporates and nothing comes about. The person thinks that whatever he/she does is the only way of life and everybody has to follow suit to his/her style of working without questioning his/her actions. Besides, we have that inherent habit of debunking others’ genuine suggestions and advices even if it is beneficial to us, as vanity and self-ego sway our way of thinking. We never take anybody’s truly ventilated viewpoints in a positive manner rather rubbish it off with the myopic belief that if I take his/her suggestion or advice, I will belittle myself and it is also possible, in some cases, if I entertain him, he/she may even dislodge me from my hard earned position!!!
Yes, Binaj Raj Pandey is a competent bloke and possesses immense knowledge, but it may also be possible that though he is trying his level best, the other CAN members (Politically nominated ones – With zero knowledge of cricket) do not allow him to do so. Or it may also be possible that he is being held back by some strong reasons which do not allow him to work independently. Or there may be something else like he’s just a pawn of some strong force and his existence as Chairman of CAN is just a namesake? But whatever may be the reason, now since buddy’s write-up has also appeared in (March 11th, 2011) Republica, I hope Mr. Binaya Raj Pandey will read it and answer what he has to say on the current affairs of Nepali cricket development and promises he has had made earlier and what are the factors and reasons which do not allow him to work on his made promises. Further, you have aptly mentioned the saying: positions are temporary but contributions are permanent! I hope he understands this stark reality and work with renewed vigour and try to put things in a right perspective…
One more thing, as you may have attended the press conference of the much talked about Nepal Premier League Cricket to be organised by an Indian individual in recent times doing the circles of cricket fraternity, if you do not mind, could you please elaborate what do you make out of this objective? I mean to say will it last for a good number of years or it will phase out within a couple of years! I have heard the individual is looking to constitute an organising committee. How about persons like you sitting on the committee, of course, you should get pay for it? I expect your view on this. As for me, I reckon the concept of NEPAL PREMIER LEAGUE CRICKET should have rather come from CAN. Now, if that Indian Individual is genuine and truly organising this tournament than CAN should welcome such type of blokes and extend the necessary support and cooperation for the successful conduct of the tournament.
Dear Ujwal Dai
A great piece of article. Thanks for letting everyone know abt Pandey’s unfulfilled promises. Also agree with Cosmic Cricket. We should post on our FB pages..
BINAY RAJ PANDEY – ROBERT MUGABE OF NEPALI CRICKET…WHY SOMEONE DOES NOT PROMOTE THE IDEA OF FREE AND FAIR ELECTIONS FOR CAN PRESIDENT..
Mr. Amir Akhtar’s suggestion of having a free and fair election not only for the President post of CAN but also for the entire set-up is the need of the hour. Besides, there should be a strict stipulation that any aspirant who desires to participate in the elections for any post of the CAN member should be from the Cricket Field. That she or she should know what is cricket all about and not just on the recommendation of any political party or from source force should he or she be allowed to participate in the elections. In addition, that aspirant person should have at least played district level cricket to become eligible for the nominations. There should also be an age-bar for the important posts of President, Vice-President & Secretary. The idea is to have young and energetic persons at such posts and not old and those remnants of feudalistic background who neither perform nor allow others to perform. The inherent characteristics of sycophancy, boot-licking, nepotism, favourtism, etc. should be eradicated from the Nepali society and only the persons on his/her merit should be allowed (Allocation of Quota system should also not be entertained). If we want to usher into New Nepal and see our country prosper and move forward, we have to think in a broader perspective and not on a partisan level. The recognition of any individual should be based on his/her merits in every sector.
One more thing, we need to think on a pragmatic level rather than having any kind of prejudiced perspectives against any individual. For e.g. If a person who is responsible to carry forward the work assigned to him/her is not performing, he/she should rather leave it voluntarily instead of sitting on a position just for the heck of it…..
The need for the hour not only in Nepal but to whole south asian boards is to have Professional Boards with proper CEO and a Board of Stakeholders structure who have knowledge of the game, how the things need to be run and also who are full time into cricket rather than having nominated trustee’s who then select/elect presidents. Such trustee’s etc are generally have some primary interests (Politics, Business etc) and the the cricket board is the secondary interest, which is merely taken to show status, power. When I speak about this I talk about all India (Former president was a Politician, present one a Businessman), Sri Lanka (Run by Politically affluent people), Pakistan (Bureaucrat nominated by politician), Bangladesh (No idea, but when captain has to plead by falling on feet of the Board President, I guess of same category), Afghanistan (Politicians, Bureaucrats) and finally Nepal (Businessman, I guess). Most white boards are professionally run and besides cricket many cricket set ups are also professionally run.
This greatly increases the efficiency and also increase the accountability or job would be lost. Hence such major structural changes are required. MAYBE NEPAL CAN LEAD IT AND SHOW THE WAY TO THE SOUTH ASIANS.
Dear sanjeev /JONATHAN SIR please give more information about nepali cricket league because i have heard this from your mouth.when is the match is going to held on?who will participate in it?who will be the organiser?
Binay pandey Dont b like Mugabe or gaddafi otherwise u will b like hosni mubarak!!!
I agree to Ujwal Dai. President of CAN have to step up and keep up with his promises. We want Nepal Cricket to grow. Players need better environment to play. CAN expects players to play well without putting their effort. Why a team like USA beats Nepal. I am in USA and i am playing a league in Dallas. We have games every week through out the year. So all the player who are playing for USA team play a match every week. This will give them match practice and they play freely which playing matches. Where as in Nepal, players get in to pressure in crunch games. If Nepali players are exposed to more games, they will play better.
Dear Bardan sir namaskar and good morning.we all neplease people who love Nepali cricket has not forgotten you.it may be your obligation staying in usa.But we wanna more wicket from Neplease team in forthcoming ACC qualifier match which is going to held on nepal.when i used to watch nepali cricket i had heard ur name.Any nepali can not forget youR superb performance IN U19 CRICKET.Never forget nepali cricket and aepali people because you are in our heart.i guess you will reply about it from this popular website.
To whom it may concern:
I humbly request who so ever concerned with the above topic to fight for a democratic and fair election for better tomorrow of CAN. FIGHT INTELLECTUALLY AND FIGHT FOR BETTERMENT.
Dear Rajendra Bhandari,
Regarding NEPAL PREMIER LEAGUE CRICKET concept in Nepal, even I read it in newspapers. It was published in most of the daily Nepali and English newspapers. In fact, there was even a press conference held. If you read above my message to buddy Ujjwal Acharya, I have asked him what he feels about this concept in Nepal. The latest news I have gathered through different sources is that the bloke, an Indian national behind this concept, had left for India and would be back in a few days’ time. Now, if the tournament really comes about as the way it has been envisioned with the support of cricket lovers of Nepal and incorporating the interests of Nepali cricket, I would say it will be a dream come true for those people involved in cricket, but do not get better deal in remuneration matters. Further, our Nepali cricketers will also get enough exposure and real match practices to hone their skills and be in tune at all times. Interestingly, we would get to see the excitement and thrilling moments of Twenty20 Cricket with razzmatazz activities right in our backyard…………
So, let’s keep our fingers crossed and hope for the best. If I get any further information, I would be more than happy to share with you all. Okay, buddy?
Meanwhile, as for Bardan Chalise, yes, he was definitely a wonderful player and had he stayed back, he would have contributed to Nepali cricket. Any way, it is good to know he still plays league cricket in Dallas, USA. So, if the NEPAL CRICKET PREMIER LEAGUE becomes a regular feature in Nepal, when he comes back here, he could avail this opportunity to participate in this tournament.
VERY VERY THANKS FOR PROVIDING GOOD INFORMATION.KEEP IN TOUCH WITH US.
Can Cricket.com.np confirm the news of NCPL. From internet and coverage by nepali newspapers it looks like a sure thing. However I trust a news on Nepali cricket once covered by cricket.com.np. Hence waiting for the news on this site
An Indian national claimed it – however journalists are suspicious for he said he hadn’t talked with CAN in this matter and that he doesn’t have sponsors as yet. How can it happen without CAN? And, when we did a little study of the website and the institution he claims to be the organizer we found nothing to make the institution credible – no events, and website of the institution is registered four months ago… so we believe its not happening.
Dear all,
We all should fight for Free and Fair elections for entire CAN’s membership including the Top positions. I agree with many followers we should structure the CAN with a CEO and form it into Board
Pandey never lets any young guys to perform any cricketing activities. Its so centric. Old wine in New bottle. .
CAN ma fair election, never imagine!!
CAN which is old than BCCI never had election in its life, all members are nominated( Sab tikae post line hakim hun!
CAn ko testo bidhan nae banya chaina ja kasko voting rights hune!! for voting rights club ly dien nadine kae niyam chaina! niyam ma district committe ko rights huncha but district cricket association ko halat yeti jhur cha bhagwan varosa ma chalya cha!
district n regional association ka member haru ni sab tikae hun, kothe chunab garar post linchan!! for eg biratnagar ma 2 international cricketer ko dad ajanma head cha, manau tyo bina tya cricket nae chaldaina. testae birganj ma nepal cricket ko virus T.B. sah ko 1chatra raj thyo pachi matra change va ho but usle CAN tir akha lagaude cha!!
bhairahwa ko hal ni ustae cha baru nepalgunj n baitadi ko stihti ali gatilo cha kina ki cricket bujya n ex player haru afno bal buto ma cricket ly jogako chan!!
so until the fair election in district no fair election in CAN and for district level there should be cricket club!!!
jasari lalu yadav le bihar ma raj garna school road nabanar barsau raj garyo, testae jay kumar nath sah and now Pandey le cricket ko develop nagarer ajiwan CAN ko president khane bichar garya cha!!!
Dear Rajendra Bhandari Ji,
Thank you for the remembrance. I have been in US for more that 7 years now but i always follow the cricket in Nepal and about its development. It is very disappointing that the indoor cricket which was suppose to be made on 2002 is still pending. This concept of indoor cricket came into picture when we did well in NZ in 2002 and it has been almost 10 years and there is no sign of it. I want to see our Nation do well in cricket because our player have in-born talents. None of the player are made. All of them who are playing for the nation team have their talents. We need a new coach who can improve our batting and we need exposure. I wish i can come back and play but it will be to hard for me to do that. I even emailed CAN, ACC and ICC about the development of Nepali cricket. I know the we got funds from ACC and ICC which has not been used at all. Even though i emailed ACC and ICC, i never got a response from them. Please find the ACC and ICC website below. Let’s email them and tell them that our CAN is not providing enough support our players to grow. I hope they will respond back once we all mail them.

The Indian company has claimed to tie up with Nepal 1. Lets check with them to know more truths about NCPL
Ncpl looks a lot suspicious…as they have already told that they want to prove themselves before approaching CAN so there is greater posibilty of seeing a battle quite similar to that of bcci and icl…dont be suprise if CAN restricts its national players from joining this league…and while searching about ncpl i found, so called advertisement with the topic audition open for nepal cricket premier league, in an indian website,www.delhi.khojle.in,…nepal cricket premier league trial 2010 interested players(coach, nis, non)….and there was given various indian places with the contact number…
Dear Bardan, Hope you well mate..
Its an indeed good move that you have started writing emails to ACC and ICC for the budget transparency. Frankly speaking all the development budgets have not been used for cricketing activities. Till today we do not have a clean dressing room, the players still get Rs 75 per day, the pitches are crap, no health incentives..nothing..
I also wrote emails to ACC, they did not reply and forwarded my email to Pandey few years ago..Then Pandey was furious why did i write email to ACC,?? Even he restricts / threatens players..
CAN and Pandey operating completely on their will without justifications..but still i hope something would happen for betterment Inshallah..You should feed your inputs to make things flourish
Hey Amir,
Hope you are doing well too. You are absolutely right about the development budgets not being used properly. Players are the medium for CAN to get money from ACC and ICC. When they play well, CAN will request more money from these institutions for the development of cricket which will be used for something else.
But being a former players of Nepal, we can see that there is no development at all. They need to make that indoor cricket immediately and start sending our player to different countries to play better cricket. Also, they need to get paid and should get health benefits. CAN official can threatened player but not the general public which will be us. We need to push them constantly and ask questions about what they have done to promote cricket in Nepal. You have send an email to ACC and i have done that too. But if hundreds of people start sending email, CAN will be obligated to improve the infrastructure for cricket.
I heard that CAN officials will come to office after 5 pm after they are done with their full time job. Players have no connections to them. When I used to be in close camps, they will make us stay in crappy ass hotel which is not even clean and food is pathetic. And they will tell the players not to eat outside because they will get sick. This is really funny. We all Nepalese should email ACC and ICC stating what CAN is doing for the welfare of crickets in Nepal and how the development money has been misused. I hope we all will do that and eventually CAN will be forced to do something better.
REPOST BUT IMPORTANT THING TO DISCUSS
For the 2012 WC the Total teams have been increased to 16. This means that 6 teams are to qualify. Also the qualifiers will have 16 teams in them. The 6 Div 1 teams automatically qualify for the same. That means Afg, Can, Ire, Ken, Neth & Scot directly qualify. The rest 10 slots will be filled as follows
Asia:- 3
Eur:- 2
Africa:- 2
Americas:- 2
EAP:- 1
The tournament for Asia is proposed TO BE HOSTED BY NEPAL 🙂 in Nov. The teams taking part are Afghanistan, Nepal, UAE, Oman, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Bhutan, Kuwait, Maldives, Saudi Arabia
Assuming Afghanistan are sure to reach the SF, then Nepal need to be in top 4. The potential SF teams are in order of Seeding
1. Afghanistan
2. Hong Kong
3. UAE
4. Nepal
5. Oman
6. Malaysia
7. Kuwait
8. Saudi Arabia
9. Maldives
10. Bhutan
Since Nepal will have a home advantage, this means they can definitely reach the qualifiers and then reach the 20-20 WC.
What Nepal needs to do:- Play more games to give practice to the batsman. Bowling and fielding are more easily picked with less practice, but batting needs loads of it. Nepal should arrange to play 20-20 matches against teams like Afg, HK, UAE or Class A teams of Ind, Pak or SL. Nepal should give a serious fight to play it first international matches. HIGH TIME A NEW COACH COMES AND PREPARES FOR 20-20 WC NOW
Hi Bardan
Thanks for your email. I am glad that you are so concerned abt Nepali Cricket despite staying too far..We all appreciate. Our voices should be heard to the right authority mate..Lets work together for Cricket prosperity in Nepal. I have also put the same article on my FB. Pls join us and i will put the same to the ministry.
Regards
