World Cup: ICC batting for money

Long before the euphoria of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011, the executive board of the International Cricket Council (ICC) accepted a recommendation that would ensure big money to the council, but ignore the overall development of the game.

Last October, the board approved that the 2015 Cricket World Cup (CWC) will consist of only 10 permanent nations and there will be no opportunities for other nations to participate in the tournament.

Why? The prime reason ICC gave earlier that more teams would extend the duration of the tournament is unfounded because the 2015 CWC will most probably consist of a total of 48 matches. This is because the 10 full members will compete in a round-robin league before the semifinals. The 2011 CWC, with 14 teams, has 49 matches.

Will one additional match make a CWC long and boring? Obviously not. The ICC is more concerned about money the CWC makes and, sadly, not interested about the matches or teams or in the development of the game.

It´s a big setback for the associate countries. There were six of them in 2007. The number was decreased to four for 2011. It´s likely that there will be none in 2015. There are only six other nations with One-Day International (ODI) status, apart from the permanent 10, and even they have no chance of qualifying for the ODI WC. World Cups are the ultimate target of any team or player, be they in any sports, and when the hopes to participate in them are dashed, it´s a big disappointment for all those who love the games.

There is already a bi-annual event for the 10 nations, the ICC Champions Trophy — and it too stays on to be a money-spinner for the cricket governing body. As compensation, the associate and affiliate nations, who seemingly do not have a chance get elevated to Test-nation status, can compete in the ICC Twenty20 World Cup featuring 16 teams.

Twenty20 format of cricket is the most unpredictable one and every cricket fan knows that it´s not the best format for the development of cricket in the nations where it is growing. This makes the situation more confusing. On one hand, ICC has repeatedly said it wants to develop cricket of all nations, but on the other, they are luring growing teams into a game that´s most unsuitable for their development.

Like majority of cricketers from the emerging nations, Nepal´s captain Paras Khadka, too, has been disappointed with the decision. But he thinks that since the ICC had changed the structure of cricket every time for the last few CWCs, the decision to play only 10 nations may be dropped at last. His might be an opinion on an optimistic note but it also reflects the ICC´s lack of commitment towards its own decisions, visions and plans.

With a hope that ICC will change its decision after 2015, there are a few things that ICC could do to really compensate for the injury made by the decision to the cricket.

The one that I would love to see is integration of at least two qualifiers to the ICC Champions Trophy.

The other, and more easier, is to give a good prize money to the top 12 associate nations (doesn´t need to be as extravagant as the CWC money) and ensure that the event is broadcasted live across the world.

Let´s hope ICC will think wisely on the development of cricket, rather than becoming purely a corporate enterprise with plans, visions and programs designed only to earn profits.

Untill ICC is dictated by ill and money minded Indians these things are bound to happen … Indian are poor administrator and have a very narrow judgment .. What sporting and administrative background does Sarad Pawar (very corrupted leader of India)is leading the ICC …why is the associate member not given voting right ??? In FIFA all country gets voting right and all the games of football are considered international if it is played between two different nation, why is it not possible in cricket ??? why associate members game are not given ODI status , very hilarious and funny , with what motive will the emerging country brings new player in the game , or is it ICC is satisfied with just these 10 nations ??? If these things do not stop then all the associate members should boycott ICC and form their own Board for cricket development then only ICCs eye will lit up … there will be problem for some years but ultimately associate member can do much more than what has been done now by ICC.. where is money collected from different games invested ?? why ICC not able to bring more country in this sport ?? why ICC focus in USA rather than country like Nepal, Afghanistan where are players are from the same nation rather than Indians playing from USA and CANADA… I find no reason behind ICC new format … shame on the management …

Being the parent organisation for international cricket, ICC should understand that the onus of responsibility lies with them to improve the standard and globalise the sport. By curbing the number of teams to participate in the world club, ICC has just done the opposite.

Associate and Affiliate nation should come together and take ICC to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, for depriving them of chance to nurture and challange the very best in their sport. I am sure ICC will be forced to rethink their decision by this. I am preety sure International Olympic Committee can also play a great part in lobbying, as ICC wants to join Olympics as a medal sports.

ICC have given enough money to developing nations. For example, Nepal is one of them. Where is that money gone. In the pocket. Indoor cricket academy was to be made on 2002 and it is 2011 already and they have not even started. Why will ICC spend any money which is not going for the welfare of cricket and cricketer. All the money is going in the pocket of CAN.

Please let me know your thoughts guys.

It’s not hidden that ICC is greedy and only seek opportunity to make money, no matter if the process is against the interest of cricket. World Cup of 10 teams will not only ruin the value of world cup, but also discourage the non-test nation to play cricket. Who wants to be cricketer if there is no big stage to show his talent ? Cricket could not get commercialization in many countries, thanks to ICC development plan, where all the money is going to nourish these top elite teams. How long can countries like Nepal or Afghanistan play cricket if ICC doesn’t give them incentives and platform to grow??

  6. cosmic cricket Avatar

@Bardan Chalise: The money “consumed” by CAN is different case. ICC is favoring money for cricket is the main theme of this discussion. And, I don’t think money given to Nepal is so much that players can earn their life through it.

There are many players in Nepal, who take cricket by passion and do not think money as the first priority. They dream to play in a big stage at least once in a life, but ICC is taking that opportunity away from them. How can the cricket develop globally if the attempt is to confine this game within 10 nations? The world cup without “world” in it sounds very funny.

@bardan-well do doubt all the ICC funding is not spent in the right reasons,if it was spent in the right areas, they would every year showed the official accounting details in newspaper which is a must for a organization like CAN,heard many things about CANS corruptions like in Lunch,to hotels, traveling allowances everything..even the water jars of players that are bought have commissions received from the CAN officials …i guess they have a very nice group of members working together from top to bottom..so everything is hidden like in our govt organizations.

I think only Six Nations are eligible to play for World Cup according to ICC response. Australia, South Africa, Pakistan, Sri-Lanka, England and Inida. Rest of all Nations play as one sided match to loose and make the strong team to qualify. And at last Im agreed with Bardaan Chalise’s comment……Well said…..This is the fact of Nepalese Leaders, Either its Sports or Politics……..They appetize……Money……..

    Hello,
The ICC decision that proposes the 2015 WC to be a 10 Nation is definitely a one to be severely criticized. But the pressure on ICC to have a money earning world cup are many.
    1. In past years ICC has increased the spending on nations beyond the test nations.
    2. It has introduced the 5 regions
    3. The WCL has introduced
    4. Trophies like Intercontinental Trophy have been introduced.
    5. ICC EARNS NOTHING FROM THE BILATERAL SERIES

Hence to fund all these activities ICC earns money from the
    1. World Cup
    2. 20-20 Championship
    3. Champions trophy

Out of this Champion Trophy does not earn much for ICC. 20-20 definitely helps.
But the 2007 WC with India and Pak out was a massive failure. This forced ICC to think on lines to have a interesting WC.

However rather than reducing the 2015 WC to 10 nations the format should have 14 teams of 2 pools. Instead of having QF and keeping the league meaningless rather the top teams from each pool goes to SF, and 2nd and 3rd go into QF. This would make things very interesting and much more competitive.

I am hopeful and pretty sure that after this world cup ICC will reverse its decision of the 10 nation proposal to a 14 or atleast 12 nation proposal.

Also other good decisions of ICC is to have an ODI league. This will have all 10 test nations and the 6 ODI status teams and each teams requiring to play against each other. This would give good enough exposure to the aspiring teams
Also the 16 nation 20-20 WC is also a good one.

I hope Nepal this time break into Top 6. With doing so they will have loads of international attention, sponsorship and responsibility besides exposure. Then it will not be looking back. But the important question is when will Nepal break into the top 6 associates. Waiting for that day.

jashan bro give more information about it.how can our country nepal select to play odi league where as nepal is in division4?may all countries are eligible to play it?plz inform it.

  13. Atit H Avatar

@ jashan bro. Where did u read about 16 ODI nation league?? When will it start??

    1. Jashan(India) Avatar

@Atit:- It is in recommendation to have a ODI league cycle of 4 years to have more excitement in bilateral ODI series. As a part to it is also recommended to extend it to all the ODI status nations. This is still a proposal and the final decision will be taken by end of 2012 FTP cycle.

    2. Jashan(India) Avatar

@Rajendra:- Nepal still have a path to reach the Top 6 Associate. The path is simple. Come in Top of Div 2, then in Div 3 and Nepal will reach the 2015 CWC Qualifiers. There 12 teams will be there
      1. All 6 teams of Div 6:- Afg, Neth, Ire, Scot, Canada & Kenya
      2. Top 4 teams of Div 2:- Div 2 has PNG, HK, UAE, Nam, Uganda & Bermuda.
      3. Top 2 teams of Div 3

So nepal play Div 4 in 2012, then Div 3 in 2012. So lets see Nepal winning or atleast coming second in both of them.

Apart from the games of England, this WC is till date indeed very dead. At the end of the day,I guess reducing the WC to ten team will turn out to be positive move from ICC. Well harsh on the associate teams like us but we dont want to see our team thrashed brutally. 10 teams qualify for WC ,that seems to be perfect equation.

ICC meeting regarding the 10 NAtion world Cup will be held in May. Hope they decide this way:-

All 10 teams need to qualify for the World Cup. Top 5 in ICC rankings ( determined by the home and away series cycle every three years) qualify automatically for the WC. Top 3 associates and affiliates from each region( Asia, Europe, Africa…. determined by the ranking cycle for senior national players by each region) play pre -world cup qualifier and top 5 play World cup qualifer with Rank 6-10 in ICC rankings. Top 5 qualify for the World Cup.

This way every bilateral or triangular series played by full member nation after the world cup will be vital and will be worth watching.

And there will be equal opportunities for all associates and affiliates to qualify for the World Cup.And the amount of games associates and affiliates will play before getting to the world Cup with quality team will surely enhance the quality of their play. And these trend will also ensure the associates and affiliates work very hard on their performance for top three spot in their region which will make inter-regional cricket interesting to follow as well.

And hope Nepal comes out in top this way.
