In 2001, when Roy Luke Dias arrived in Nepal as the national cricket coach, nobody knew what exactly the tiny Himalayan nation would achieve under him and for how long he would stay. He was the coach of Sri Lanka in the 1999 World Cup in England, and that fact alone made us proud to have him.
I always believed Dias chose to be Nepal´s coach due to an ego. He was fired immediately after the 1999 World Cup for Sri Lanka´s bad performance, and also because Dias, who is a strict disciplinarian, criticized star players for not playing well.
He was labeled an incapable coach, and the only way he could prove himself was by shocking them with his abilities.
In 1999, Nepal had reached the Super Eight of the Youth World Cup in Sri Lanka beating Kenya, and Dias saw the possibility. The rest is history; but my wish to see Nepal beat Sri Lanka remained unfulfilled. That didn´t happen (Dias surely wanted to take Nepal to the World Cup); but on Wednesday, Nepal nearly beat Sri Lanka in the Asian Games in China in the match that was his last as Nepal´s coach.
After the match, the entire Sri Lankan media in China turned to Dias; and just before he returns to his country to take up a job at the cricket board, he would still walk proud in the limelight. Not a perfect farewell by Nepali cricketers, but not a bad one either.
During his stint in Nepal, Dias not only brought the best out of young teams but also taught cricketers the importance of patience, hard work and discipline. He was not a beloved man to all cricketers for when players tried to go ´free´, he was too critical and didn´t like it. Once he told me: “I know if I let them play free, they will win some tough matches, but it´s more likely that they will also lose some easy ones.” And, I wholeheartedly agree.
Of late, however, there were criticisms against him. It wasn´t because he degraded as a coach but rather due to general frustrations with Nepali cricket. Despite high hopes pinned on Nepal, there was no World Cup qualification, no big matches with Test nations, and Nepal lost a lot of crunch matches, and lately, as other nations progressed, Nepal remained in the same spot for lack of proper program and planning.
I don´t think Dias will ever work the way he worked in Nepal. He was virtually given every powers that a coach requires. Media were all positive — there were no criticisms; and the cricket board respected almost all his decisions.
Dias as a coach avoided aggression, innovation and technological assistance — something of a fashion in international cricket those days. Going with that, many called him a ´traditional coach´. It´s true, but it´s also the best thing that budding cricketers required.
Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) decided not to renew his contract, and he was asked if he wanted to go with the team to the Asian Games. For his humbleness and love for Nepal, he agreed despite knowing that there was not much chance of winning any medal. And, his decision paid dividends.
It´s time for the beloved man of Nepali cricket to move ahead. With Nepal´s success credited to him, Dias can always be proud, and probably those who thought of him as an incompetent coach a decade ago have eaten crow.
I feel sad saying good-bye to you because of your contributions to our cricket. We will get another coach (hopefully more successful than you) but it´s highly unlikely that we will get a Nepal-loving man like you.
Good bye, Roy!

AU REVOIR !!!
With the exit of Roy Luke Dias from the Nepali cricketing circle, an era of his charismatic coaching stint to our Nepali cricketers will come to an end! The victory against Sri Lanka in the 16th Asian Games would have been a fitting tribute to this gentleman, but nevertheless, our boys tremendous effort even making the test-experience gained players to toil for victory should be something Mr. Dias will take it as a token of appreciable swan song performance by his wards…. Now, it is beyond an iota of doubt that his contributions have been immense for the overall development of Nepali cricket. He has really put into his sweat and blood for the cricket development. Whatever major achievements Nepal has earned in international cricket it has been under his hawk-eyed coaching and traditional way of imparting the cricketing skills. Though many may say, his traditional style may not be suitable in present scheme of things, in reality, this very traditional coaching style has laid a strong foundation of the Nepali cricket where from Nepal could look forward to solidifying with innovative and new coaching styles to be imparted by the Incumbent-coach in the coming days. Now, it would be a matter of great interest to Cricket aficionados to know what strategy does Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) adopt to rope in best of the coach to further take up the legacy of good work done by Roy Luke Dias and put Nepali cricket on the international circuit? No doubt, it would be a tough job to find the right person for this challenging job. The Incumbent-coach will really have to prove his credentials with innovative and result-oriented coaching tactics. Even if he cannot better what his predecessor has done, at least, he will have to maintain the same momentum. Apart from imparting cricketing skills, the Incumbent-coach will have to understand the socio-eco-politico-religious aspects of the Nepali players where they come from. He will also have to develop good rapport with the players, concerned CAN officials; media, etc. so that he could understand the ethos of Nepali cricket and work accordingly. By understanding it, he could inculcate his style of coaching and working which is suitable to Nepal’s context with the related persons. My suggestion to CAN is to advertise the requirement of Cricket coach and depending upon the background and credentials of the aspirant coaches, a few may be culled and call for interviews. However, Cricket Association of Nepal will also have to bear in mind the cost factor as the fee and other facilities of foreign coaches may be astronomical and unaffordable, to say the least. Considering our socio-economic aspects, at the end, we may have to settle for either Indian or Bangladeshi or Pakistani or Sri Lankan. But, whatever decision CAN takes in this regard, I reckon, CAN officials will take it seriously considering the long-term impact on Nepali cricket. At a time, when most of the Non-test playing countries are hiring best of the coaches keeping in mind definitive goals and objectives, we just cannot afford to take a myopic decision akin to our political leaders who take decision only at the eleventh hour…
For Mr. Roy Luke Dias, I have found him to be a man of genteel manners and very down-to-earth. His affable nature and ever ready to impart and share knowledge is a disposition which is very difficult to find nowadays. At a time, when a bloke with an international status thinks himself a privileged being and omniscient and the rest are nuts, and talk snobbishly, his disposition is something I highly appreciate and a role model for others. I shared very good rapport and it always had been a cordial affair whenever I met him. Last time, I met him at the inauguration ceremony of Beyond the Boundary documentary. During my halcyon days, when I was very much involved in regular cricket commentaries and emceeing at local, national and international cricket tournaments, and CAN’s organised functions, he always had a word of encouragement which pepped me up to hone my skills.
Sir, Roy Luke Dias, we shall always remember you for the immense contribution you put into for the development of Nepali cricket. We hope you will always be available for any advice and suggestion we may need in the coming days pertaining to cricketing aspects as you will always be remembered as the revered Acharya (Dronacharya). This is because the relationship of Guru and Shishya never ceases with the completion of a certain assigned course time-period rather it remains forever and the blessings of the Guru should always be showering upon his Shishyas…..
As for your upcoming stint on the Sri Lankan Cricket Board, our best wishes are with you for a successful endeavour. May your astute and dynamic contributions play a pivotal role in Sri Lankan cricket achieving major milestones……………The World Cup 2011 is just round the corner in the sub-continent and who knows Sri Lanka may win its second World Cup……….
Firstly, a big thanks to Dias. He has done so much for Nepal and we would be nowhere here without him. However I think it was time for him to go and bring some change to the nepali coaching. So it is kind of bittersweet movement.
So what kindda coach we getting next? The rumor was that we might get some indian coach in a part time basis…I hope not.
nepal needs coach from either australia or south africa..
kapil dev, saurav ganguli, adam gilchrist, jay surya might be a gud opti0n but i knw we cnt aff0rt them as coach, expensive felowz :p. Bt pandey must bring sum1 ab0ve roy luke dias’ prestige, we cnt go d0wn in our coach’s standard.. And 1 m0re thng, plz tel me abt the next tournament nepal will be taking part in???
If anything, Government of Nepal must honor Dais Sir with Honorary Citizenship of Nepal..
He has given his valuable 10 years of service to Nepali Cricket and brought us to this place. No any other coach either Nepali or Expat has ever contributed as much Dias Sir has.
We salute you Sir.
Regards
Tajim
We must have a coach who can boost the batting of nepal cricket as accordance to this era.Icc now is thinking to lower the overs in odi format and increase the overs in T20 format. So the need of today is agressive batting dominating the bowlers.
I think nepal’s next tournament is acc u-19 elite cup….this time they must do well n qualify for the next u-19 world cup.
Al r talkng of dias positiv wich is gud 8 farewel bt we must not forget the bitter reality! The money n time we spend on ROY DIAS was much more than our achievment! Does any1 know how much CAN paid 2 him? It is said that he used 2 take 4-5 thousand US dolar with other facilities! In dat amount we cud hv got 6 international coaches for 6 regional teams!
Cricket fans were shouting aftr loss in WCQ game div 2 in 2005 and aftr 2006 ACC trophy bt CAN undermined it! Dias is a khukuri without edges,he nevr taught aggresive criket,4 10 yrs he shouted BASIC n BASIC making d nation below basic! He always intervene in player selection, captain decesion n manipulating in playing 11! He always favoured few u-19 players n nevr gave other talent players in team!
Afganis r doing gud due 2 their aggresive play not by coach! He was coach in 1999 4 srilanka wher he made his country 4m hero to zero! If he thinks he’s best coach,he must go to BHUTAN or SURINAME to uplift their standard!
U-19 achievments were not of DIAS only,it was d players atitude n dedication! In ZEST,DIAS Workd in nepal bt when he came before n went aftr level of game is in same! Senior team strugling in div 4,u-19 had played in 2000 world cup before he came in and b4 his departure u-19 failed 2 qualify in 2010 u-19 wc! So wat i say he is just “SOAP BUBBLE”,we must nt flater him 2much!
CAN planing 2 bring worst coach dan DIAS that also in part time!
Now it wil b pandey n paneru 2 demolish d nepal cricket!
I would not agree 100% with the post above…
I do agree he was quite defensive..but there is a very good quote on the article, “I know if I let them play free, they will win some tough matches, but it´s more likely that they will also lose some easy ones.” and one can suddenly realise why he did so! This will mean that the cricketers we have now..and in generations to come, will have that class of classic cricketing skills.
Although I do also agree, we shud have had a change in coach some 2-3 years ago. But for periods before that, I would not liked to have seen any other coaches! Our boys have talent and dedication, but without a proper guidance it will be of little use. It is just like the Arjun- Sri Krishna incident of Mahabharat era!
He did take a good hefty salary, but I have fair grounds to believe that it was heavily subsidized by ACC. Nways, hope we can get a good coach that brings aggression in our boys! Although I wish our boys rotated the strike more often..theres 50-100 runs right there!
With Roy leaving it is high time for CAN to appoint an Batting coach from Aus / Ind and a bowling coach from Pak to sharpen the bowling strength further.
Besides this they should quickly after 2011 WC start playing against BD & Afg. I am pretty sure in some time both Nep and Afg will be regularly beating BD. This would help in many ways
1. Give a team greater exposure by playing against teams of equal level
2. Bring attention to Nepal Cricket. More attention would mean more funds, more sponsorships and more development of cricket
3. This would also start the process of taking Cricket Popular nations of Nep and Afg towards the top level
4. Last show the actual place of Bangladesh
I hope to see some concrete actions by CAN now so that Nepal can take it to the next level and loose the title of Chokers

@ Tazim- Dias has already been awarded honarary citizenship of nepal several years back.
And, yup though dias was a traditional coach he has built a very strong foundation and has taught almost everything from his side that a newly emerging nation in cricket needs. Now, we need a modern dynamic coach and his job won’t be that tough….he can easily impose his dynamics upon the base laid down by dias….then we will soon get actual output from 10 yrs of dias’ input.
Good luck Sir. Thank you for your wonderful contribution. You will always be remembered in Nepalese Cricket History.
if there was a team game that Nepal could compete in international era, its cricket. it is a shame that Nepal has not achieved what it should have – with parts to be blamed on our media who lack influential critics.
but negatives aside, credit has to be given to the man as well for keeping the team tight and the youth interested in the game.
Thank you ROY sir for your contribution and good luck to you. I suggest you to start a cricket academy in Nepal. It could be profitable to you as a business and good for country.
Regarding a new coach I believe that we should approach to Pakistani coach preferably a fast bowler like Wasim Akram. Nepal has enormous talent on bowling side. I won’t be surprised if we have the best fast bowlers of the world in next 5 yrs.
Coach Roy Dias has bid adieu but he will always be close to our hearts. His contribution to Nepali cricket is priceless and exemplary.
Had it not been his devotion and rich expertise ,coupled with effective coaching style and around the clock guidance, we would not have been where we are today in contemporary cricket.
As a coach he was friendly, outright, ambitious, professional, result oriented and a great motivator. He assumed the position of national coach at a time when Nepali cricket was passing through a very challenging phase.
Undaunted by the circumstance, a dogged and strong willed Dias inked the contract. Slowly but steadily he made things happen despite obstacles all around.
He might not have fully accomplished what he personally cherished but the matter of fact is that from our perspective we achieved more than we ever thought of. More importantly, we made significant headway internationally, earning us recognition and respect, which at times seemed beyond our imagination.
He deserves more than words of appreciation for his fantastic work. His service will be greatly missed by the entire cricket fraternity.
Finding the right replacement for the Sri Lankan will not be easy for CAN. Hopefully, someone competent, able and devoted shows up to step into the shoes left behind by Dias.
bye roy.

@JAAshan(EEndia)
Just look at you JA JA Shan ( EEEndia), crying and complaining like a female dog – you make me laugh – MU HA HA MU HA HA HA.
Roy Dias the finest coach of Nepali cricket . His products to Nepal will ever be remembered . Players like Paras ,Shakti , rahul , alam mahesh and many more his ablities given to nepal was rhe best the Sri Lankan style seen in Nepali players was the greatest achievment that he had given . We all miss you ROY , you where the bestest coach of Nepal and we all love you………….long live Roy
@Reaz:- Yes man. I am complaining. What to do wen all the cut pen*is have given terrorism to the world. It’s better to ignore them coz they live like ants in their own country often mauled by all (NATO, US, themselves too!). So rather ignore these mentally retarded CP (Cut Pen*is) terrorists :D. Best of Luck Mr Reaz. And think beyond being a suicide bomber if u got any brains.
@Reaz:- Today you gave me eternal happiness. I could give a desperate CP Terrorist some reason to laugh. Laugh more and delay the suicide bombing in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan or many other places for some time. But wat else can u do. If u don go for that you will die of hunger in BD. I ll pray for ur soul :d
@DUR HO JA JJASSAN(EENDIA)( the great forum troll from eeendia)
you are such a moron that you couldn’t post your reply under my post rather posted it under user bibek bhatta’s post(goes to show your aptitude – can’t even use a forum/website properly – you do have enormous working brain!) & what a classy reply it is!!! your parents will be so proud of you!!!
But lets not waste our time & Nepal Cricket’s space – it’s not fair to other users.Give it a rest man.You will be in my prayers too.
Jashan: From your comments I interpret that you are trying to connect REAZ as a terrorist, muslim etc.
FYI …We NEPALESE don’t talk much about RACE neither we like it. Please, take your thought somewhere not in this forum. Would appreciate that.
@Reaz:- Yes CP Suicide Bomber :D. The retard has finally talked some sense 😛
@Reaz:- I don know your parents will be proud coz they will be making more CP Sucide Bombers like you. That is the best thing you do with your cp. oooo getting angry. Don come as a sucide bomber to kill me as other innocents will also be killed. Poor u. Plus somehow there does not come a reply sign under your post. But why do I justify to the Cut Pen*is mentally retarded suicide bomber. He cannot understand:D
plz tel me who was coach of nepali team bef0re roy dias, and who will be after roy dias?? Its always roy dias roy dias roy dias roy dias roy dias roy dias roy dias roy dias roy dias. We have nevr heard about anybody else.. So this proves that so called “samantawad” or “samantisasan” in nepali cricket, roy dias is gyanendra of ‘cricket kingdom of nepal’, and pandey is the back f0rce here. So lets throw pandey and dias(almost thrown away) away and lets bring gadatantra in nepali cricket :p. And if u r thinkin abt c0ntributi0n of dias, he did nthn!! Nepal was beatin kenya in 1999(before dias) and is loosing to hongk0ng in 2010(with dias). So thnk b4 u write sumthn go0d abt dias..
@ atit.. ur correct man…He did nth for nepal. The performance of the national team is not represented by the child level game. He is just a coach for child; not for the senior level. We have own talent with in country and we are not exporting players from any other test playing nations. The junior team plays with their own energy. One of the friend in this forum wrote that he is just a ‘khukuri without edge”; bhutte khukuri. Our player forget to play aggressive game and we had lost to callow team like Afghanistan, who start to play cricket recently. They are becoming next Bangladesh and I am sure they would get Test status soon. Binay raj pandey is a shit in Nepali cricket. He deteriorates the quality of cricket day by day. So one poison is removed from nepali cricket but we still have other; binay raj pandey. He should be shacked from CAN ASAP.
Guys,
There is nothing that Roy can do until CAN steps forward and make sure that there is enough cricket in Nepal. It is not Roy’s job to have the domestic cricket going on. In his early tenure, he used to speak a lot to have more domestic games and exposure for Nepali player but was always ignored. He is an employee who will get paid for his services. If CAN step forward and conduct more tournaments in Nepal, we will see new faces and guys will have more match practice to perform well. We have only one ground which is not even maintained well. It is a spin track and that is the reason players have tough time playing abroad in faster wickets. We need more turfs, more domestic games, more players so that we can have the best 14. Also, CAN need to talk to Indian Cricket Board to let Nepal play in the Ranji trophy which was done by Bangladesh in their early ages. That will let the boys play a higher level of cricket and play their shots. Since Nepalese players play in a spin tract all the time, they can not go an play shot in a fast track where the ball bounces a lot and swings a lot. So we need more faster tracks and this should be all done by CAN. It does not matter who ever is the new coach because they can only suggest boys tips but to increase their level of cricket, they need to play games for the entire year and also with good teams. CAN need to go out and get sponsors and conduct more domestic cricket to get new talents and give player more match practices.
yo mzi khate le kaile yo site lai update gardaina. Auta naya heading dekhincha ki.. Vanera site kh0lyo, last ma kei na kei. Goddium na khate administrator lai.
we need adam gilchrist as our new coach…………..and getting back to mr.roy…he did nothing for our cricket………he jus talked about basic basic and only basic……the coach should teach a team how to win the games not the basic of the game which roy always emphasized on…………………..
We must change our not only coach but also need to change captain.
Bardan dai is totally correct. Roy Dias was a great coach….but cricket is somewhat like mathematics — sikaidina lai ramro teacher matra bhaaera hundai na,student sanga copy, pen ra bharpur padhne samaya ra batawarand pani hunu parcha…so the blame should goes to the management..
