Free Blogs to College Student

Kathmandu Pragya Kunja College has become the first college in Nepal to offer free web space for blogging to the students. It is one of my initiatives after beginning teaching mass communication and journalism to the undergrad students at the college.

The college provided 20MB space with preinstalled WordPress to all student studying in Bachelors’ in Arts (BA). The college began the level with Sociology, English literature and Mass Communication and Journalism under Tribhuvan University this year.

The blogs of students can be accessed through the main blog of the Mass Communication and Journalism department available at http://journalism.kpkc.edu.np/.

It was not difficult to persuade the college administration for that as I have so far found that they are enthusiastic about such new innovations that helps for studies. In the college newsletter, college principle Divesh Dhungana said that they hoped that the use of blogs would increase students’ knowledge. “The main objective is to give students a forum to share study related resources and to write about their activities,” he was quoted.

I have found that the students are enthusiastic about the blogging and a few of them have written a few entries. Among 20 students, even if five continues blogging for long, I will consider it as a success.

And, last week I gave a lecture on blogs to the trainees of the 10-month journalism training conducted by Nepal Press Institute. The trainees had almost finished their training and it was quite interesting discussions as they raised various issues.
