This blog is in response to Dashing Deep’s blog about sex-taboo and sex-tsunami. His views about the sex education is indeed a ‘widespread’ feeling among educated and his research though was of a small scale is indeed praiseworthy. Here are some findings that amazed me and made me wonder.
First the age of the first sexual experience: 7 per cent boys and girls before 13 and 21 per cent boys and 11 per cent girls before they reach the age of 16, and a large number 37 per cent boys and 31 per cent girls before they reach the age of 18 (which is the threshold age in western countries I believe).
Proper sex education can be of great help here.
Second: Incest! That’s unacceptable everywhere. But 11 per cent boys and 13 per cent girls said they first had relationship with relatives. Isn’t sex taboo hiding a dirty secret that could have otherwise surfaced at the police stations. I wonder How much per cent to those had sex in early age. If the 11/13 per cent comprises largely of those who had first experience before they reach 18, isn’t it child exploitation? A punishable act.
Third: Nine per cent of boys and 11 per cent of girls are involved because they can’t turn down the offer. Wouldn’t proper education be a help here?
Fourth: The number of partners. I think having multiple partners at a tender age is not good anywhere while it’s unacceptable in our society. Sixty per cent of boys and fifty-eight per cent of girls have multiple partners. (And let’s remind all, we are talking about young generation aged 16-24.
Fifth and last for now: The medium which they use for the ‘sex learning’. 49.5 per cent of boys and 45.5 per cent girls learn from TV/newspaper/Cinema (but I don’t remember any good program that talks about sex education.) So learning is largely from the unreliable sources which not always portraits right and sufficient information.
Sex education would be a great help in all these.
