Religious Gurus & Me

I remember going to Pashupatinath area early morning a few years ago with my close friend Nilesh to have a darshan of Sankaracharya – Jayendra Saraswoti of Kanchi Kam Kothi peth of India. I have no faith whatsoever on those types of religious gurus, but I don’t know why did I went there at that time. Its a coincidence, that early morning today when I tuned TV, I heard that he has been arrested for murder charge.

As a matter of face, I never believed that those gurus are divine – I just see them as a good speaker and that’s they have somewhat hypnotyzing power to capture followers.

I used to speak frankly against those but I ceased doing all that after seeing one of my classmate turning into Sai Baba’s follower and leaving behind all bad habits. I thought: whosoever they are, at least doing some good. Otherwise, I didn’t like Sai Baba at all: I have even kicked away his locket despite warning from one of his followers that it would do me harm.

I remember seeing Ram Chandra Poudel, one of the prominient politician of Nepal, visiting Sankaracharya at Pashupati when I was there. He was treated well by Sankaracharya (the TV said he had good relations with political leaders of India and predicted him as a powerful man). Nilesh and I had a tika from him but when we saw that he somewhat brutally ordered (or scolded) an elderly man to go away soon, we lost whatsoever faith we had on him.

Nilesh told me: this man can’t be divine because for divine man there should be no difference between two men – be one a politician and another without such identity. We both washed away his tikas and returned immediately vowing that we would never come to such gurus again.

Today, I admire our decision.
