For being a part-time computer teacher at my brother’s school, I sometime got invited for ‘repairing’ jobs – some of which I would like to describe as funny one. They have left me wondering why the hell the people buy computer in Nepal.
Incident No 1:
A student of me asked me requested me to do something to her computer so that it would run Microsoft Excel. I asked her what happened and she told me that there is no ‘excel thing’ on the start menu or desktop to click on. I went to her home and what I did was created a shortcut of excel on desktop.
Incident No 2:
A friend of mine told me that his cousin someone did some nasty thing on the computer and there is no programs on it. When I saw their computer, it was true there was no program (leaving a few) installed. I asked the little one, studying in class 8 or 9 I think, what he had done. His answer: “I was just looking at all programs on start menu, Adobe Photoshop, Readme and the uninstall one!”
These were just examples, on a numereous occasions, I have come across with even funnier situations – people have asked me to install programs, uninstall them, make their photo wallpaper on their computer, and et al.
Computer has become a necessity in Nepali home – not because of its usability but because of its popularity. People just want computer in their home and the latest one. For what? To listen MP3s, watch VCDs, play games and thats all. Their children may have learnt to use DOS or Word in school but nothing useful.
Computer has become fashion, though I don’t like computer become wastage that their homes, I am not against it either. I believe keeping a computer at home may be helpful to their little one who will learn a few things about it.
